การใช้ can / could / be able to / manage

can ใช้เมื่อพูดถึงความสามารถว่า ใครสามารถทำอะไรได้ 

Can you play the piano.

มักใช้คู่กับกริยา see, notice etc :

I can hear someone calling 

และใช้คู่กับ passive infinitive ด้วย

The DVD can be rented from your local store

คำว่า Can และ Be able to ใช้ในการพูดถึงว่าความเป็นไปได้ หรือคนใดคนหนึ่งมีโอกาสที่จะทำสิ่งนั้น

Can you/are you able to come on Saturday?

จะใช้รูป be able to ในการพูดถึงโครงสร้าง future และ perfect tense และ infinitive

You will be able to get a taxi outside the station.

I havent' been able to get much work done today.

She'd love to be able to play the piano.

Could ใช้พูดถึงความสามารถทั่วไปในเรื่องที่ผ่านมาแล้ว

Our daughter could walk when she was nine months old.

จะใช้ was able/were able to หรือ manage (ไม่ใช้ could) เมื่อเวลาที่พูดถึงความเป็นไปได้ในโอกาสใดโอกาสหนึ่งโดยเฉพาะในอดีต

I was able to/managed to find some useful books in the library.

แต่ในประโยคปฏิเสธ สามารถใช้คำว่า could not ได้

We weren't able to/didn't manage to/couldn't get there in time.

สามารถใช้ Could ในความหมายนี้ได้กับกริยาประเภท see, notice, understand etc :

I could see there was something wrong.

Could have + V3 จะใช้ในกรณีที่พูดถึงความเป็นไปได้ในอดีตแต่ไม่ได้พยายามทำ

I could have  won the game but decided to let her win.
